4th Sunday of Easter

Today, the fourth Sunday of Easter is Vocation Sunday.  It is also referred to as the Good Shepherd Sunday.  Firstly, on this day, we pray for increase in priestly and religious vocations.  Secondly, we pray that priests and religious will emulate their model, Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd.  Hence, the theme: ‘THE GOOD SHEPHERD – THE MODEL FOR PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS’.

Beloved, to appreciate well Jesus’ reference to himself as the ‘Good Shepherd’, we should begin from the Old Testament.

OLD TESTAMENT:

NEW TESTAMENT

Finally, therefore, borrowing the words of St. Peter, join me to pray that all priests and religious will ‘shepherd the flock which God has entrusted to [them], guarding it not out of obligation but willingly for God’s sake; not as [those] looking for profit but with a generous heart; [that they will] not lord it over those in [their] care, rather be an example to [their] flock.  Then when the Chief Shepherd appears, [they] will be given a crown of unfading glory’ (1 Peter 5:2-4).  Amen!
